Faculty Scholarships
One of the key factors contributing to the continuing national nursing shortage
is a lack of available and qualified nursing faculty. Without sufficient staff
available to teach courses in nursing, schools of nursing are forced to turn
away thousands of applicants every year. In 2005, more than 147,000 qualified
applicants were denied admission to nursing programs and the most cited reason
was a shortage in faculty.

A top priority for the NLN and the NLN Foundation is to attract more seasoned
and ethnically diverse nurses to become nurse educators by awarding scholarships
and fellowships, thus decreasing the nurse faculty shortage and increasing
the overall numbers of qualified nurses in the workplace. The immediate
need for external funding to educate experienced nurses to teach new nurses
is critical to the very survival of the US healthcare system.
