The Ruth D. Corcoran Fund for Nursing Education Research

When NLN CEO and long-time leader in nursing education Dr. Ruth Corcoran retired in January 2007 after nine years of stellar service to the League, there was no better way to honor her than with the Ruth Corcoran Fund for Nursing Education Research. Created with the gratitude of the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education Board of Trustees, NLN staff, contributing NLN members, and friends, this fund is a tribute to her professional and personal legacy.

Dr. Corcoran's tenure at the NLN was marked by excellence. Indeed, her invaluable contributions have endured and laid the groundwork for a bright future at the National League for Nursing. As CEO, Ruth Corcoran displayed extraordinary leadership to the NLN by focusing on the needs of the nursing education community, developing lasting relationships with peers and health care organization leaders, and becoming a role model for other association leaders and members of the nursing community. By teaching, mentoring, and affirming staff, members, and volunteers, she achieved a transparent environment dedicated to learning and improving nursing education practice and research.

Through the Ruth D. Corcoran Fund for Nursing Education, the NLN and NLN Foundation bestowed a research grant on Elizabeth A. Johnson PhD, RN, GCNS-BC, from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana for Redesigning Clinical Learning through Simulation and Practice: Clinical Judgment in Action. The award was formally announced at the NLN Education Summit in Philadelphia on September 25, 2009. This multi-site study will evaluate, in simulation and clinical practice settings, restructured clinical learning developed to teach students to optimize geriatric patient outcomes through excellent clinical judgments.

The National League for Nursing Foundation for Nursing Education and the NLN are dedicated to providing more nursing education research opportunities to faculty. The mission of the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education is to raise, steward, and distribute funds that promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce.
