Program Description
The National League for Nursing and the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education are pleased to announce the second NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat.

If you have recently completed a research study or innovative project but have not had the time to craft an article for publication, this workshop is for you. The NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat is designed to help nurse educators enhance writing skills and disseminate research findings in scholarly publications. By the end of the retreat, our goal is for each participant to have a complete, edited paper ready for submission to a scholarly journal.

Marilyn H. Oermann, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, professor and division chair at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing will lead the retreat. Dr. Oermann has contributed to nursing education through her many books and articles that guide faculty practice. Her books include Writing for Publication in Nursing, Evaluation and Testing in Nursing Education, Clinical Teaching Strategies in Nursing, and the Annual Review of Nursing Education.

Joining Dr. Oermann will be Leslie Block, managing editor of Nursing Education Perspectives, the NLN journal. Ms. Block was previously the managing editor of Nursing Research and senior editor of MCN, The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing.

The retreat will take place from May 29-31, 2009. The program will begin at 12:00 pm on Friday and end by 3:00 pm on Sunday. All meals will be provided, beginning with lunch on Friday and ending with breakfast on Sunday. Group and individual sessions will be scheduled at varied times throughout the retreat, and ample time and privacy will be available for writing.

Participants can expect to earn 1.70 CEUs.

This program addresses the following Core Competencies for Nurse Educators©:

 Competency 6:
Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role

 Competency 7:
      Engage in Scholarship

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Due to the nature of the program, space is limited to nine participants. Selected participants will be chosen through a competitive application process. Prospective participants must be currently serving as full-time faculty at a school of nursing and MUST be members of the NLN, either as individual members or through their school's agency membership.

Applicants must have recently completed a research project or literature review, or have another topic appropriate for development into a manuscript, and must submit a completed application form. The application form includes the purpose, target audience, key data that will be evidenced, and the Core Competencies of Nurse Educators that will be addressed, along with a personal statement describing the applicant's interest in participating in this retreat and greatest challenge with regard to scholarly writing. Within two weeks of notification of acceptance, applicants must be prepared to schedule a conference call to review their manuscripts and appropriate journals for submission. Three weeks before the retreat, participants must be prepared to submit a first draft of their manuscripts for review and then plan time for a one-hour call to discuss the manuscript.

The NLN is actively seeking ways to advance our diversity goal. Applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and/or papers that address diversity in nursing education in some manner are encouraged. Preference will also be given to papers that address the NLN Research Priorities in Nursing Education (www.nln.org/research/priorities.htm).
