Scholarly Writing Retreat Fall 2014

Thanks to a generous five-year grant from Pocket Nurse Enterprises, Inc., the National League for Nursing and the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education are pleased to continue the expansion of the NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat, now in its seventh year.
If you have recently completed a research study or innovative project but have not had the time to craft an article for publication, this workshop is for you. The NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat is designed to help nurse educators enhance writing skills and disseminate research findings and other work in scholarly publications. By the end of the retreat, our goal is for each participant to have a complete, edited paper ready for submission to a scholarly journal.
Although NLN Scholarly Writing Retreats take place during the course of a weekend, this is a yearlong experience that involves one-on-one telephone consultation and mentorship.
Leslie H. Nicoll, PhD, MBA, RN, BC, principal and owner of Maine Desk LLC, a provider of professional editorial services, will lead this retreat. A former associate research professor at the College of Nursing and Health Professions, University of Southern Maine, Dr. Nicoll is editor of CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing.
Joining Dr. Nicoll will be Leslie Block, managing editor of Nursing Education Perspectives, the NLN's research journal. Ms. Block was previously the managing editor of Nursing Research and senior editor of MCN, The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing.
The retreat will begin at 2:00 pm on Friday and end by 12:00 pm on Sunday. All meals will be provided, beginning with dinner on Friday and ending with breakfast on Sunday. Group and individual sessions will be scheduled at varied times throughout the retreats, and ample time and privacy will be available for writing.
Participants can expect to earn 1.70 CEUs.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Due to the nature of the program, space is limited to 10 participants at each location. Selected participants will be chosen through a competitive application process. Prospective participants must be currently serving as faculty at a school of nursing. Preference will be given to full-time faculty, but part-time faculty may be considered. Preference will also be given to members of the NLN, either as individual members or through their school's agency membership.
Applicants must have recently completed a research project or literature review or have another topic appropriate for development into a manuscript, and must submit a completed application form. The application form includes the purpose, target audience, key data that will be evidenced, and the Core Competencies of Nurse Educators that will be addressed, along with a personal statement describing the applicant's interest in participating in this retreat and greatest challenge with regard to scholarly writing.
Upon notification of acceptance, participants will be asked to sign an agreement indicating their understanding of their responsibilities prior to the retreat as follows: Within two weeks of acceptance, participants must schedule a telephone call with the retreat leader to discuss the topic, plan work on an outline, and review potential journals for submission. The leader will read the participant's outline and provide feedback leading to an initial draft of the manuscript. At least two weeks prior to the retreat, the leader will review the draft manuscript and provide initial editing and advice.
During the retreat, participants will receive assistance in preparing a manuscript suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. With the understanding that most manuscripts submitted for publication require revision prior to acceptance, the retreat leaders will work on revisions with participants for a period of time not to exceed one year.
The NLN is actively seeking ways to advance our diversity goal. Applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and/or papers that address diversity in nursing education in some manner are encouraged. Preference will also be given to papers that address the NLN Research Priorities in Nursing Education (www.nln.org/researchgrants/priorities.htm).
